Warning For Halloween

By: Lauren Trevor

Before you go out on Halloween to face off against all the monsters and ghouls, make sure you understand what you’re up against! Whether you’re planning on blending in with them or fending them off this Halloween, make sure you know how to recognize one!

One of the most well-known on the list of beasts is the Lycanthrope, or more commonly known as the werewolf. These monsters are known to be created by one of two ways, according to legend. The first is the one everyone knows, the classic transformation into a werewolf as a result of being bitten by one. The second is the less renowned werewolf curse. Ironically, however, this is how the original legend describes one becoming a werewolf.

In the earliest recorded appearance of this creature, a story by Ovid a Roman poet, the first werewolf was King Lycaon, who greatly angered the gods when he served them human meat at a banquet in their honour. As punishment, the gods cursed him and he began to take the shape of a wolf, a more fitting appearance to match his cannibalistic tendencies. In these original tales of the wolf-men, the full moon had nothing to do with the creatures, and in fact, they could change at will at any given time of day or night. As time progressed, however, the tale of the wolf-man evolved into what we know of today, and the legend differs from culture to culture. But in any version it’s true that these beasts are the fearsome kings of the night, so makes sure to stock up on dog treats and squirt bottles unless you’d like to be dinner this coming Halloween!
